Emmeline Pankhurst: Little People, Big Dreams

Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Manchester England and grew up in a time when life was not very easy for people. As her family were not hugely rich but not poor either, they did what they could to help people who did not have very much money.

She learned to read at the age of three, which was something very special as children did not have to go to school back then. She loved to read stories about hero’s and just like you, often wondered what she would be when she grew up, but always knew that because she was a girl, she would probably be married and have children, run the house and care for her family.

But Emmeline was a little different to most girls as she did not understand why she could not go to University, vote and get a job, just like her brothers.

As she grew older she began to learn about a group of women who were beginning to campaign for women’s rights, and begged her mother to take her to a meeting of the group.  As soon as she finished school she began to campaign for women’s rights, met Richard, a lawyer working with the women, fell in love and eventually they had their own family.

This was the beginning of the suffragette’s campaign or movement lead by Emmeline Pankhurst which increased in size and motion, eventually wining the right for the women’s vote in Britain, which over many more years, lead onto a lot more rights for women.

By standing up for what she believed in, by becoming a voice which stood out in the crowd, she became what she always dreamed of when she was a small child, a hero.

If you want to be like Emmeline, always believe in what you do and be a leader, stand up for what you believe, and make sure you read more about her wonderful, challenging life.  Her life is very inspiring and helps  to understand a lot more about women at the turn of the 19th century, a very important time in history.
