The Familiar Dark

Single mother Eve’s world collapses when her daughter Junie and her friend Izzy are viciously murdered in the local dilapidated park. Twelve year old Junie was the love of her mother’s life. Eve’s life had been difficult and dysfunctional from the start.

Raised by a drug – addicted mother in the poorest of poor part of the Missouri Ozarks in the small town of Barren Springs; barren both in name and opportunities. With little help from the corrupt local police force, vengeful Eve, shedding her veneer of civilization, sets about to discover the truth surrounding her daughter’s brutal murder and to bring them to justice.

This is a powerful story of a mother’s love, her loss, her grief and the secrets she uncovers in her endeavour to answer the questions of ‘who’ and ‘why’. In telling of the mystery the author has developed credible flawed characters, who traverse the town’s underbelly, where no one can be trusted.

In particular, Eve’s pain jumps of the pages, as she sets about to uncover the secrets surrounding her daughter’s untimely death. Returning to places she hasn’t visited since her youth, places she vowed she’d never visit again, she finally discovers the truth.

Many words can be used to describe this page turner; sad, heartbreaking, gritty and tragic. I highly recommend this absorbing, fast paced book with its many unpredictable twists; it captivates the reader’s interest from beginning to end.
