In today’s world of chemical enhancement in just about every area of modern life, there is a definite movement towards organic food production which makes this second release of organic by well known and loved garden guru, Don Burke very timely.

In amongst the pages of this “Who’s Who” or should one say the “What’s What” of organic gardening for Australian families there is something for everyone; the novice to the experienced, the kids, or the person who has only a balcony or back porch on which to grow container gardens.

As with all very good books on any subject the introduction gives an insight into Burke and his philosophes in regard to gardening. A well worded section explains just what organic gardening is all about and looks at varieties of plants, new and old, organic produce and fertilisers, pest control, bio-dynamics and food labelling.

Commencing with construction and soil preparation, moving on to choice of seeds/seedlings to planting out, making your own compost, espaliering, for those who have minimal room but still would like to grow fruit, making this not just a gardening book but a book about gardens. And yes there is definitely a difference.

Once your garden is underway and it comes time to harvest, Burke has include a great section on eating the produce of your garden with some mouth-watering recipes such as Garlic Mushrooms with Polenta and Sultana and Carrot Cheesecake to name just two. There are details on preservation of fruit and vegetables, making a scarecrow (not just for the kids) and believe it or not, a piece on collecting bugs; definitely for the kids.

Seasonal planting has a chapter of its own as does keeping chooks, with each chapter beautifully detailed and illustrated with clear concise photography.

There are stories from real people who have created real gardens and have eaten real, flavour filled food for their efforts.

Do’s and Don’t have been included to help you avoid those garden tragedies with the final chapter in this must have garden companion devoted to problem solving; something dear to all gardeners hearts.

A great read, dip into, recipe book and cost effective Christmas gift idea for those who are thinking about gardening or are already in the full throughs of gardening.
