Florence is a baby hedgehog who lives in a tree in the forest with her mother. Florence loves the seasons and their differences, but wasn’t sure about winter as she “slept right through it”.

Her mother explains that she has a last chance to play with her friends Harry and Barry, the squirrels, before they all must hibernate.  The three friends feeling a little grown up and daring, rush off to play and ignore neighbours warnings to go home.

Even though there is a sinister creature following them, they continue on their journey, until they notice just how dark it has become and how much snow is beginning to fall. As the fox declares it is tea time they know they must return home immediately. Helped by those friendly neighbours the trio arrive home safely.

Cate James has illustrated this book in a simplistic style. The colours match the seasons and weather. As the friends move from page to page, a sharp pair of teeth, a pointy face, and a bushy tail is to is seen lurking nearby, but mostly hidden by a tree. This element of danger presents itself suddenly, but we always have the feeling the friends will be safe. The stylised figures convey suitable expressions.

Other animals join in to help the young ones and the end of the story shows a big hug from Mum, lots of food to eat, and best of all a warm bed to snuggle up in; a lovely way to end an evening and begin a sleep, not for the whole of winter, but just for the night.
