This fantasy story for young readers contains all the elements of a fantasy genre, put together in an excellent and cohesive manner.

Moll, the gypsy girl who knows that she is different, and Gryff, the wild cat, who is always at her side face their adventures together.

The clearing in the woods where they live with other gypsies is a short distance away from a river.  Across that river is the dark magic. Moll finds out that she and Gryff are the only ones who can keep the dark sorcery of the Dream Snatcher at bay.  Suspense and action are never far away.

There are many situations that arise and amazing twists and turns in the story.  Moll is captured by the evil ones and put in a cage, but is befriended by a boy who helps her to escape.  It has been foretold by the Oracle Bones that Moll is empowered by the death of her family to fulfil the role of destroyer of the Dream Snatcher.  Moll and Alfie set out to find “the maiden” who can solve the riddle of the bones.

It is good to see a young female heroine, feisty and rebellious, take on the role of overcoming dark sorcery.  Although relating to Moll can be difficult at times, her emotions, anger and defiance show a passionate person.  Even though Moll’s parents died to save her, the reader is reassured by the voice of her father, who says that he will always be a star in the sky, watching over her.

This fantasy will engage young readers.  It has suspense, drama, and love and loyalty.  The relationship between Moll and Gryff gives continuous comfort in a quite scary story.  It has elements of  Roald Dahl’s stories, but not the humour and fun.
