Children are mostly fascinated with food. Young children love to taste, touch squeeze and smell food. It is a familiar and friendly part of their day and satisfies hunger. “We Eat Bananas”, is a vibrant, colourful story about food, animals who eat it, and numbers. Incorporated in this story is a rich language content in small bubbles, very suitable for reading to small children.

Each colourful double page spread in this book shows a variety of animals engaged in activities. Children are invited to find their favourite fruit in the first pages. Pancakes are the subject of the next double page spread. This also shows that the animals have favourite foods and dislike others. Humour is introduced to the story by language and illustrations. The picture of the giraffe eating a pancake stack is amusing.

Soup, sandwiches, fast foods Ice cream, peas and beans, are some of the foods mentioned in this story. The animals who eat or farm the food are shown on most of the pages, allowing the reader to follow their food preferences. The last double spread shows animals who eat everything.

Children are invited to become involved in the story with questions such as “What do you eat?” This is a hugely entertaining and educational book. Animals of all kinds are depicted, many foods that appeal to children are shown, and the links from page to page engage the reader. The illustrations are bright and the humour adds to the story. This will be a popular and well-read book.
