Mollie Sugden has left Grace Brothers and the role that made her famous, Mrs Slocombe to take up housekeeping duties as Ida Willis in a young couple’s apartment in the hit TV series, That’s My Boy.
However, we find out in episode one that the husband is in fact the son she gave up for adoption decades earlier. Ida immediately befriends her daughter-in-law Angie but doesn’t have the same success with her son Robert. Their bristly relationship provides many hilarious moments along with Ida’s dealings with her hapless brother, Wilfred and Roberts adoptive mother, Mrs Price. And there lies the mayhem, as Ida meddles in the young couple’s daily lives.
In true British sitcom style the series comprises of six episodes with episode three, Happy Birthdays, Robert a stand out when Ida and Mrs Price celebrate Robert’s birthday over copious glasses of red wine.
That’s My Boy may not have the popularity of Are you Being Served but it does provide an adequate follow-up and a welcome step back in time to the early 1980’s.
The show went on to enjoy five series and two Christmas Specials. Series 1 and 2 are available now and the Complete Series is due for release in May 2012.
