What happened to the mega-talented musician Rodriguez?
These questions and many more are answered in the outstanding documentary, Searching for Sugar Man.
Rodriguez was ‘discovered’ in 1968 and went on to record to two albums in the early 1970s, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality. Considered a genius by all who worked with him, both albums flopped in America and its then that the real story begins.
Unbeknownst to him his albums were bootlegged and found their way to South Africa where he achieved a cult like status but he was nowhere to be seen. Over the years many stories evolved including suicide attempts on stage but no one really knew so an investigation began into what happened to the ‘Sugar Man’.
Two South African fans , Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom took up the challenge and this led to analysing his lyrics for clues to his background, advertisements and interviews from world renowned producers, musicians, journalists and family members .
And then one day the breakthrough they had been waiting for.
Searching for Sugar Man tells the story of a musical genius who somehow slipped through the cracks into obscurity. This moving 83-minute narrative went on to win the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary and Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
His story beggars belief.
Extras include the Making of, Rodriguez live and the trailer.
