Growing older comes with its own rules as time can no longer be counted in years, only in weeks, months or maybe even days, which adds a dimension to everyday matters the younger generations frequently fail to grasp, one which John Uttley, in his latest book The End of the Line captures perfectly with protagonists Jim and Sheila.
Jim, who has just said the final goodbye to his beloved wife, is now facing a future that is vastly different and a house that is his home but no longer seems to be his home. They were a childless couple which was never an issue in their lives.
Sheila, once a dear and beloved friend of Jim’s, is now widowed with a large family to support her. She believes life must be lived to the fullest and opportunities to be happy need to be grasped with both hands.
They meet up again and realise that, even though they have not been alone ong, there is a certain something still simmering in their relationship that deserves further exploration, much to Sheila’s family’s consternation. Considering they live in a Village this is no small undertaking, as they understand everyone they know will have an opinion on this fledgling relationship and it may not always be a positive one.
Rose, Jims’s sister, now also widowed in tragic circumstances, moves in with him, and as the elder sibling, is more than happy to tell Jim the what’s and wherefores of life, as they now both know it. They cohabitate comfortably, the habits of a lifetime blending relatively harmoniously.
Funny, witty and very wise, The End of the Line captures perfectly the dynamics of families once the elder moves into a space that is different, challenging, at a time when they are considered to be too old, on the shelf and incapable of making their own decisions, as far as new relationships are concerned.
Many who pick up this look at growing older, dealt to with a light hand and amusing touch, will laugh, cry and agree that when you are coming up to the end of the line, rules are made to be broken and opportunities are meant to be lived to the fullest: however long that may be..
