This large hardback picture book, The Sky, is an informative reference book about the sky. The format is set out in such a way that children can have easy access to the information. There are many large pictures and diagrams which make it simple to follow the text. The author has presented information to satisfy curious minds and explain carefully, the aspects of our sky.

The introduction poses the question, “Why do we look at the sky?” The small pictures and text explain that it is a common occupation for most people. The weather is one reason that we are so fascinated with the sky.

A clever, simple diagram shows the cover of earth. The Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere and Thermosphere are shown. Each has an explanation and a diagram to clarify the height. An airplane travels in the Troposphere. Following that page, we have information on the colours in the sky and the weather. A section on clouds gives clear information about different types of clouds and their names.

There are chapters on Wind, Storms, and Extreme weather, these are followed by Strange phenomenon, showing tricks of the atmosphere. The heading, “Rulers of the Skies,” elaborates on different cultures and their perceptions.

In Greek Mythology the Griffin was a creature, half eagle and half lion who roamed the skies. Flying Machines, Star constellations, Secrets of space, and Human inventions are just a few of the full colour spreads which enhance this book.

The Sky is a marvellous book for referencing and for just browsing the fascinating information, so well presented.
