A Girl Called Corpse is a large novel for competent readers, and probably those with a love of humour and the macabre. The illustrations on the front and back cover alert the reader that this is no gentle fairy story, and the description, “Fright Tale” is accurate. The genre calls for a particular type of reader, one who enjoys horror stories and mystery journeys. There is nothing bloodthirsty in this tale, but the lass is dead.

Corpse and her pet the huntsman spider, live to hide from the witches. They are the ones who make sure you don’t return to earth but go away permanently. So far Corpse has been able to avoid them, and when they are not looking, she forms a body for herself out of wax from their candles. She may have shells for eyes, and seaweed from the beach for hair, but she still has enough of an idea to form some plans.

With great surprise Corpse finds a message. Following the instructions, she gradually begins to unravel her past life. Along the way she meets others who also have not been taken on the last voyage. After many exciting discoveries such as “The rock-that-doesn’t-exist, and Weresquid, and thunder-things, Corpse realises she is not alone in this strange place.

Meanwhile her parents spend another restless night wishing they had never come to this place where they lost their daughter. “Someday we’ll find our way back to her,” says a sad father. Definitely a book for the brave.
