Any reader who enjoys the sea and exploring underwater will enjoy this Children’s picture book, Beach Song. The illustrations and text combine to present a child’s love of the ocean and the many animals and plants to be seen there. As a child, the author spent time at the beach and wanted to share her feelings of peace and harmony that she found there.

As the double page spread shows pictures of a child relating to a dolphin, a seal, and a whale, the connection to life underwater is shown as a magic discovery time. The child mimics’ the actions of small fish as they glide by, and swims like a squid. In the rock pools there are periwinkles to be found, and shells which leave trails behind them. A full day passes with time spent observing and following interesting creatures.

While feeling the warmth of a summer’s day, the reader also learns many things. We find out that a turtle digs a hole in the sand to lay eggs, that bats hang upside down to sleep, and that lizards leave tracks in the sand.

Beach Song is a wonderful combination of story and pictures to remind us and to tempt us to rediscover that wonderful world waiting by the sea shore.
