From the beginning of Ethel The Penguin we can see that Ethel the Penguin is a very naughty one. This is told by her best friend, a child who lives next door. They don’t sit together in school because Ethel is often tempted to disrupt the class.

One day Ethel decides that it would be great fun to ride the Ferris wheel. She leaves a note for her parents and does just that. Her distraught parents hurry to the theme park, only to find Ethel has indeed mounted the Ferris Wheel.

This delightful story about an unashamedly naughty penguin, is told in rhyme. “Ethel the penguin’s parents were terribly UPSET.  WHAT! Gone for a ride on a Ferris wheel And not had dinner yet?!” The animation on the animals faces completes the story and adds to the humour. We see Ethel’s family eating fish fingers for tea, then driving to the park.

The double page spreads give much added detail to the story while the language is ideal for reading aloud. The vibrant colours used add to the delight of the reader. Some words are in large font for exaggeration. Ethel is indeed a handful.
