The Children’s hard back picture book, How To Measure The Ocean has delightful illustrations of the ocean and many of the creatures and plants that live in it. There are also maps, charts, and diagrams included. These support the many mathematical concepts which are introduced throughout the book.

These concepts begin simply with the idea of measurement (How to measure the Ocean.) The children in the story present many hypotheses to complete this task. The author encourages children to think about ideas and to expand their understanding.

A map shows the location of the Oceans of the world with old and new oceans discussed. A number line is drawn through the depths of the water. Shapes of shells, sizes and colours are shown. There is also a diagram to show the water cycle of the world.

The end pages of the book ask the reader to measure the length, width and height of the book and then imagine what changes there would be if the book was made of stone.

As a children’s Picture Book, How To Measure The Ocean has illustrations which are engaging and attractive. The colourful scenes of children playing in the water and on the beach are captivating. The Math’s concepts which are explained are advanced and perhaps intended as an introduction to more complex ideas.
