Simple Wisdom for Children

Everything about My First Book of Zen exudes calm and tranquil feelings. The title and illustrations on the front cover suggests a gentle story within. The beginning of the story explains, “Zen. It’s a nice word, small enough to fit in your pocket and take anywhere.” Two children are shown with the heading “Spring” on the page.

The children are excited about welcoming spring. Sam is hoping for a special birthday present, and Molly is thinking about how she misses her friend. Then she realises that they have almost missed the clouds passing by. The girl has a note in her pocket. It is a quote saying, “Just being alive–miraculous to be in cherry blossom shadows!” by Issa.

But all is not bliss. Molly must clean her room, and she accidentally breaks a precious ornament. She remembers words from her father and begins the task of cleaning her room. Her brother sits by her, knowing that she is sad. Another note found talks about kindness.

The next season is Summer, and there are many wonders to observe in the yard. A quote is shown, and the tranquil setting remains. Autumn arrives and change is discussed. The quote here ensures we make sense of change and move with it.

When the children go to school, Sam finds a note in his shoe. He reads it later and smiles. The teacher sees him smiling and smiles as well. Then the other children look and smile. Winter arrives and snuggling under warm blankets is bliss.

The notes that the children’s mother leaves them have a huge impact on the way they see the world and how they behave. My First Book of Zen promotes thoughtfulness, tranquillity, kindness, and awareness. It is a joy to read at any age.
