The main character in The Remarkable Truths of Alfie Bains is Alfie Baines, a nine-year-old boy with a remarkable intellect and grasp of human nature. His life has been straight forward until now. Raised by his mother in an open and truthful relationship, he has managed to survive school by being very quiet and reading the many scientific books she has borrowed from the Library.

After ten years, Alfie’s mother, Emilia, decides to return home to her mother. Penny is overjoyed to see her daughter and grandson, but shocked when Alfie reveals he is trying to find his father from the sperm donors his mother chose.

Penny knows that Alfie’s father was married to his mother, and he was not a random fertilization. Julian was the name of Alfie’s father and to complicate matters, he lived in a large house on the hill where his father’s parents, Dr Pat and Mother Cynthia live.  They eventually come across Alfie instantly noticing a strong family resemblance.

As the plot unfolds, we become more enamoured with Alfie. He is determined to find out about his father and has many creative ways of going about this. Everyone who meets him enjoys his personality and honesty.

The Remarkable Truths of Alfie Bains story is entertaining. Many characters are introduced, and their relationship to Alfie explained. The chapters are headed and narrated by each character and are divided into NOW and THEN. This ensures a slow and careful reading of the book, but Alfie and his story are worth it.
