One of the most essential skills we need to teach our children is to determine what is true or fact, and what is opinion or unreal. Unreal is a terrific way to entertain children, while giving them a mission to uncover fact from fiction. The author has set the story in the Natural History Museum, but some of the exhibits have accidentally been mixed up with items from Myths and Legends. The reader is asked to help identify which items need to go and which need to stay.

The great beginning tells the reader the five questions to ask (and hopefully memorise for all time) to help you sort what is true. These questions are, “Who is providing me with this information, Do they have evidence, Why are they telling me this, How recent is the information, Do other sources agree?” An excellent reference for readers to refer to.

Now the fun begins! A puzzled youth is seen looking at the exhibits. There is a set of facts for each one. These creatures are from the deep ocean. There is a Vampire Squid, a Marine Iguana, a Lamprey, and a Kraken. Those familiar with the Pirates of the Caribbean will instantly be able to choose the odd one out. However, the fact that it is described as “Large enough to sink a ship,” gives rise to doubts. The following double page spread gives a brief description of each sea creature. Yes, the Kraken legend was probably inspired by the real-life giant squid.

The contents show us that the topics are varied. They include, Among the Branches, Bioluminescence, Life below ground, A fish out of water and Megafauna. The author questions whether proof exists of such creatures as the Loch Ness Monster. This is a book that requires a direct reader response and engagement. An excellent resource for children.
