Colourful, fun and bursting with ideas, Kate Pankhurst sets out the steps for you to make your own inventions in her latest book We Are All Inventor’s We are introduced to Lizzie Sparks who is an inventor who has currently lost her hamster and  Ruby, a babysitter and mentor who enters the room to help Ruby with an invention which went wonky as well as help find her hamster. She assures Lizzy that just because your invention doesn’t work it doesn’t mean that it can’t be changed or used later.

Ruby assures Lizzy that she has the “Spark.” You need curiosity, and imagination along with the ability to spot a problem, think carefully about it and bounce back if your first work doesn’t succeed. In the following page, the author sets out the game rules for a winning invention. They include thinking about a problem and ways to solve it. Then having a snack for brain power. Next you need to research, investigate and speak to an expert. The last step is to create a design and build it, allowing for mistakes.

Over the next pages, we move to the home. Inventions such as the ironing board and washing machine are shown,  early computers are mentioned, and how they have progressed today. There are inventions from nature, such as a shark skin swimsuits and burr seeds which inspired Velcro. Cars, trains and buildings are looked at from an invention perspective. The last pages look at young children who have invented extraordinary things to help our communities.

We Are All Inventors is a bright bubbly book sure to inspire many readers to begin the search for their own project or invention.
