A crayoned note ‘Bad Mommy’ scrawled in a child’s hand is attached to a young woman’s body which was found lying on a park bench in a neighbourhood playground; this is the only clue.  Meticulously made up, she was carefully dressed in vintage clothes. Is her murder related to the disappearance of two other young women of similar appearance? Does Lieutenant Eve Dallas have a serial killer on her hands?

After consulting with the highly skilled resident profiler Charlotte Mira, Detective Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Delia Peabody have their suspicions confirmed; they are dealing with a perpetrator who has mommy issues; he is trying to replicate his mother.

It becomes a race against time to find the abducted women before they transition from a good to a bad mommy. Using her skills of deduction, Eve begins to unravel the events, which took place several decades ago; it will take all available resources to dig into the past to uncover this devious killer. She has to get into the psyche of this murderer, before another of atrocity occurs.

In this 54th book in the ‘Death Series’ by Nora Roberts, penned under the pseudonym J.D. Robb, police detective Eve Dallas is again up to her proverbial neck in a mystifying, perplexing, and bewildering case of murder. This time the author employs a “Before” and “Now” timeline, which focuses on the victims, their loved ones and the search; readers of this series will find this a change.

Although this is a stand-alone novel, readers of the ‘Death Series’ will enjoy following Eve’s interactions with her circle of friends and colleagues. This intriguing mystery/thriller has a twist towards the end which will keep the reader turning the pages!
