Belfast in 1986 is being held firmly in the grip of a winter that seems like it will never end: The “troubles” are for once not overly demanding and there seems to be a little bit of peace and quiet on the streets. Life goes on but for RUC Inspector Sean Duffy on yet another stake out, this time involving MI5; he is over it, he is cold, bored and sure that this is yet another stakeout which is headed for a classic stuff-up.

He’s right and makes the decision to quietly leave the scene head home for a bit of sleep, a nice glass of something alcoholic and some decent music.

There’s been murder, this time on the boarder of two police jurisdictions, but it inside the  Carrick RUC’s patch and his special abilities at handling the tough stuff are a called for to sort out what looks like a budding turf war between Larne and Carrick RUC’s over who gets to run the case.

The victims, a husband and wife have been shot in the head and there is a lot of money involved.
Seems like a simple open and shut case except people associated with the couple keep dying in what looks like relatively unsuspicious circumstances, but somehow something it not right.

The ‘ not right’ draws Duffy and his team into territory that while not new is filled with more twists and turns than a Belfast mews, plunging him into what turns out to be a deeper plot involving the IRA, munitions , the Americans and Special Branch.

In this far from classic murder mystery Duffy draws a darkly chill picture of an Ireland held in the grip of a terrifying violence, and a policeman who has seen it all, facing a future that looks bleak.

Riveting and fast paced, placed in a time when life was cheap and to do the wrong thing was to face death by some unexpected means, the plot and action will keep the light burning long into the night as you enjoy the dark humour of Inspector Sean Dufy, his mate Sargent McCrabban and new recruit Deceptive Lawson as they face the unthinkable and try not get themselves killed in the line of duty!
