Poor Paige! Our lives are constantly beset with problems and obstacles to overcome. Her journey is no different, but she has many physical and emotional issues to deal with as well.

Paige lost a child. Shortly after this tragedy she suffered a stroke which left her with physical issues. The most serious was her loss of smell and taste. As a food writer this was devastating and cost her a wonderful job.

Shortly after that she discovered her husband had slept with a woman at the office Christmas Party. Apart from her beautiful daughter and her loving mother Alice, Paige feels her life is falling apart and she needs a break.

Desperate for time and space, Paige decides to take a trip to the country. Her mother insists on coming and can help mind Matilda, who is a chatty six years old. The Australian outback is very fickle however, and flooding rains prevent her from driving to her destination. Even her up market four wheel drive can’t cross the flooded creeks.

The family group stop at a local pub and are offered accommodation until the road is clear. Alice is desperate to move on and it is here we learn that she has a shattering secret that she has kept for many years. By coincidence, Paige has brought her to the very town that harbours her secret.

There are many social issues dealt with in this book. Alice’s partner was Nancy, who recently died of cancer. Paige’s rocky marriage and the demanding husband she has left behind leave her with some important   decisions to make, while remembering how much her husband loves his daughter.

There are aspects of this story that people can relate to as it is a story of modern day families, secrets and dealing with the past. The Australian bush setting is a marvellous foil of peace compared to Paige’s troubles.
