In this laugh out loud, tongue in cheek look at babies, Margaret Mumford has captured the desperation and laughter that come when a baby, in this case the Royal baby, just simply won’t settle down to sleep.

The noise of the everyday activities of the palace seem to upset the little bundle of joy and brings the Royal household almost to a halt as the desperate parents try anything to try get the Prince to sleep. Granny, the Queen, even takes to parachuting from the Royal jet with the baby, to try and get the little darling to sleep.

Grandad, the King, takes to rocking the cradle, the Royal dummy won’t work for very long. Every time the baby settles to sleep something always wakes him up: the Changing of the Guard, his Aunt and Uncle getting ready for the celebration party, the Royal corgis taking their daily walk: just simply everything;

Finally, Granny, the Queen, says this is enough: all he needs is a cuddle from his Mum and dad and so that’s what they did.

You may just happen to recognise some of the Royal characters in the book so well captured by Ada Grey, which adds that something special to a celebration of new life for which the world long has waited.
