Many books often do not translate well into English, but an exception would have to be “The Countesses of Castello” translated from the Italian by Brigid Maher.

Beautifully written and intimately detailed, Milena Agus has captured the essence of life in the everyday world of the “Countesses” who often struggle to accept life and love, is changing around them.

Three sisters, the elder with her passions for things family, the second with her love of her husband and overwhelming desire for a child and the third sister known as the “Countess Ricotta”, whose heart and feelings often tend to overrule just about everything that is considered normal by her sisters, along with a supporting cast of characters, allow us to enter their lives for just a very little while.

We are led gently into their world, so much so that eventually we are caught up into the ever, but maybe never, changing world of life in Cagliari, the daily endeavours of the ladies, their friends and neighbours.

Everyday people, with not so everyday lives, are bought to life in an illusion of life as they would like it and not all that often as it is, thus creating an aura of mystery within a simple story.

This second book in the trilogy can be read in its own right but to do it real justice get the first in the series “ The House on Via Manno” and settle in for a good read.
