Light and enjoyable this is Regency fiction at its best. Based in history during the time of the Napoleon’s reign, we find our heroine Charlotte Raven being drawn into a plot to smuggle much of England’s gold across to France in order to fill the Emperor Napoleon’s coffers and in theory deplete England’s financial resources.

Coming from a background as a chimney sweep and having moved into the aristocracy Charlotte finds her past catching up with her in the form of a London underworld boss and her former lover.

A house party in the country sees Charlotte meeting her old nemeses who intends to take her Hostesses children from the family home in the payment for a debt owing. Charlotte helps foil the plot and by doing so lands herself into a far worse situation: that of having to help her friend’s brother, who is a secret agent for the Crown and nobleman to boot, challenge and confront many of the people in her past in order to find out who is smuggling the gold coin and why.

The plot has as many twists and turns as the Stews of London; more than enough to keep the story intriguing and enjoyable. And as with all Regency fiction will the heroine win the day and meet her true love or not! Can she risk all that she has gained for true love and will her past ever let her go?
