Set in the Vatican City, father Alex Andreou a Greek Catholic priest and his brother Father Simon, a Roman Catholic priest, find themselves deeply involved in the murder of Ugo Nogara, friend to both brothers and also the curator for the exhibition of the ‘Shroud of Turin’ soon to be opened under the auspices of the Church.
Only days before this momentous event Ugo is found murdered. Simon calls Alex to come and get him from what turns out to be the scene of the crime and by doing so, plunges not only Alex and himself in danger but also Alex’s young son, Peter.
Using the Twelve Disciples as reference points, the clues left behind by Ugo, who knew as the opening of the exhibition drew closer he would be in mortal danger, leads ever forward to why an exhibition of the ‘Shroud’, all-be-it a holy relic, should provoke such intensity to require murder take place.
Father Alex, known for his stick-ability when osolving a problem, slowly peals back the layers to discover that there is more to the history of the ‘Shroud’ than is publically known.
What did Ugo discover as he researched the history of the “Turin Shroud’ that needs to be kept silent and what impact is this going to have on the on the Catholic Church.
Filled with intrigue, espionage and all the trappings of the secrecy of life in the walled City, the book tells a tale of conflict between two chapters of the Roman Catholic faith, the Greek and Roman beliefs.
Carefully researched over ten years, Ian Caldwell has drawn an intricate picture of what can go wrong when the basic and fundamental beliefs of an institution are at stake.
This is an incredibly intriguing and addictive ‘who dun it’ that is very, very difficult to put down, as it details very carefully the lengths some people will go to, in order to prevent the truth being told. It does not matter how you try to work out the finale you simply will not until the final layer is pealed back.
Intrigue and suspense at it very, very best.
