Secrets and lies often eat away at the soul; excitement comes at a price. How long can her extra marital affaire be kept a secret from her husband, family and friends in a close knit community, particularly when the lover is found with his throat slashed in his study?

Narrator, Rikke feels that her life is in the doldrums, so when the opportunity presents itself she enters into a clandestine liaison with the handsome womanizing Jorgen, who is her upstairs’ neighbour in a small block of flats in Tasen, Oslo.  Towards the end of their relationship Rikki finds Jorgen dead.

How long will it take the police to discover that she has a key to his apartment? She must act swiftly. Inquiries into the murder lead the police to focus on the four families who live in this quiet neighbourhood; they are the only suspects. As the investigation intensifies, secrets start to unravel; the neighbours become paranoid and suspect each other of the crime.

This first person Scandi thriller is character driven by individuals who are multilayered, secretive and suspicious. Many readers will enjoy this slow burning psychological thriller, with its many twists and turns which keep you guessing until the final pages.

‘The Lover’ Helene Flood’s second adult novel has been translated by Alison McCullough and will no doubt be enjoyed by those who delight in her first popular novel ‘The Therapist’ which was sold in 27 countries.
