Writing about Australian women living in small rural towns is what Karly Lane excels at as she avoids the stereotyping and presents real women with everyday issues and challenges. Twist of Fate is no exception and deals with family disruptions, wealthy weddings in the outback and ordinary people living the best way they know how.

Bel is one of the women in the small town who has become rather complacent. She left school with plans to spread her wings and travel, but an ailing grandmother, who had raised her, kept her home. Later, she stayed in the house and ran the small petrol station and store. Life was easy and as Bel loved reading, she was never short of entertainment.

Bel’s best friend, Emma, married her school sweetheart, and four children later they are still very happy together.  Then there is Bel’s cousin Larkin, who has asked the young woman to be her bridesmaid. When a group of socialites come to town for the wedding, Bel wonders if she has seen her perfect man. Difficulties arise in many areas and life changes rapidly for all these characters.

As always, Karly’s love of the bush and countryside shines through the pages. Her descriptions of the plants and trees and vistas always please. The sense of community and cooperation that many country people have shines through this story.

There are the humorous and passionate advocates for change such as wanting to see Elvis the Rooster as the town mascot. Bel’s romance and uncertainty echo many feelings that young women around the world have, but there is no mistaking the Aussie in this story.
