There is a wealth of information in this beautifully presented little book Cats & Us. Its hardback cover lends itself perfectly for the photographs and opposing page information. Everything a new cat owner would wish to know is addressed here, and many articles are sheer fun and fascinating facts. Some of the chapter’s deal with, Cats in jail, Cats at sea, Cats in school, Old cats, The role of a cat, and, Moving with your cat.

There are several mentions of the healing powers of cats. Their purr releases endorphins in the cat and the human. It was noticed that cats had an effect on people in a Residential Care service, so they purchased three cats to live in the home. They were the stimulus to get people out of their rooms. Petting a cat activates our oxytocin system and reduces the cortisol level in the brain. Therapy cats can be found in airports, hospitals, courtrooms, and airports.

There is much practical information to be had in this book. Ways to make friends with a cat, to garden with a cat and methods to handle elderly cats, are some of the tips given. There is also helpful advice about taking your cat to the Vet, working with feral cats, cat routines and play.

For cat lovers, the photographs are moving and delightful. There are also some wonderful quotes such as this from Mark Twain, “Cats are the cleanest, cunningest and most intelligent things I know.” They certainly are!
