Flight MH370 is proving to be one of the most intriguing airline disasters of recent time; A plane setting off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport on a routine flight to Beijing vanishes somewhere, or so it would seem at the time, over the South China Sea on March 8, 2014.
The 12 crew along with the 227 passengers simply disappeared and none of the flight control centres could verify when the plane was last seen, or in contact with the ground.
Almost immediately a range of theory’s sprang up, some far-fetched and some plausible, but the end result was the same, families still waited news of their loved ones but slowly, as the days ticked by, the realisation that they had all gone, most likely crashed into the sea or somewhere else, began to look like the reality.
Countries not noted for their cooperation joined forces to try to ascertain just what had happened, where the plane may have gone or have been last seen. Networks used for many other reasons took to scanning the skies, trolling through their data and trying to analyse, something or anything that would help to throw some light onto what had happened, with little or no success.
As the weeks slowly rolled on the search area was pinpointed to the Indian Ocean off the West Australian coastline where the waters are deep, fast flowing and have differing and powerful ocean currents converging. Thousands of dollars, and hours and hours of time were invested into searching the area for any trace of the missing plane without success.
Today the search still goes on; the families are left with the knowledge that whatever has happened their loved ones are gone and the mystery of what, where, why and how, is still very, very, much alive.
Detailing the facts at this time may seem a little strange, as there has not yet been any definite conclusion as to what did happen, but in some ways this helps to follow the processes and the international contributions that have been made in the search.
It has not solved the mystery but does give clear and detailed information on this disappearance and many more that have cause aviation and maritime investigators to continue the search for answers for many years.
The one question that still hangs there clear and loud is: In this time of communication overkill, how is it that a plane load of people, armed with mobile phones, the state of the art aviation communication devices installed on board the plane with a trained crew, along with an aircraft the size of an very large football field, simply vanish?
