Concise and informative, Joe Biden The American Dreamer by journalist Evan Osnos, paints an excellent and well balanced portrait of Joe Biden, the man who is to become the next President of the United States; a man who has vowed to bring a breath of fresh air to an Office that has over the past weeks drawn the focus of the World to American politics, for all the wrong reasons.

Biden has been in politics for more than 50 years, beginning as a young Senator in 1973, the year Richard Nixon was re-elected in a landslide victory, despite the issue of Watergate looming. Over the years he has made more than his fair share of gaffs, supported the wrong causes or made decisions based on the information and political climate of the day, which now, with the benefit of hindsight, he regrets.

But over his many years he has also built up a strong network of people who have immense respect for this man, who has suffered heartbreaking personal tragedy, serious health issues during his running for President during the lead up to the 2009 elections, which was to see a young Barak Obama become the 44th President of the United States of America and the first African-American to hold the office of President; Biden was to become his Vice President.

Biden, once he regained his momentum, realised that the office of Vice President was something he would enjoy if he had something that really mattered to work with, and so became an invaluable assistant to Obama with his immense knowledge of world politics, the American parliamentary system, all burnished by his many years in the political area.

Happy to accept some ‘time in the sun’, once the Trump Presidency arrived, it was not until immense tragedy began to unfold in America he realised that perhaps he should run for the office of President once again. Against much heckling, he continued walking a middle road, often denigrated for his style, his ability to say what he thought instead of sticking to the script and his age, but against great odds, he won the election in November 2020 and is at the time of writing, due to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the USA.

His pathway has not been easy, the task ahead of him great. Evan Osnos has captured in a timely manner the very essence of who is, in many ways a quite achiever, respected and loved by many; a man who, with the benefit of age, experience and time understands what it is that drives people, the things that matter to the everyday man and woman and perhaps, as only time will tell, could well be the perfect choice to lead America and its people, thought what is forming up to be truly tumultuous times ahead.
