Dash and Lily have spent the year apart, heartbreakingly so, Dash at Cambridge, in England studying Literature, Classics and English with Lily still in New York taking a gap year and developing her dog walking business.
Because he has sent her a message to say he won’t be home for Christmas, Lily decides to surprise Dash with a visit to England for the Christmas week, sending him an Advent Calendar made by her to hopefully clue him in, as he does not do the unexpected terribly well. But somehow something goes amiss when Dash appears to fail to turn up at an event hosted at her cousins wife book store, Daunt Books in Marylebone, but when he does arrive he is dressed in the first ‘stare’ of fashion and accompanied by his grandmother Gem, who is also dressed to impress.
Mind the Gap looks at the choices that sometime need to be made and the repercussions that may and sometimes do follow, when following the chosen pathway, that is the one chosen by family, is not the right pathway, but trying to discover what is can be upsetting, challenging and eventually rewarding.
Lily and Dash are both facing choices about what next in their future. Dash is feeling desperately homesick for NY and Lily wants to develop her dog walking business further, despite her family pressure to attend Barclays in the New Year.
Throw in a magical Christmas in London that certainly does not go the way Lily had planned, add a little interference in the nicest possible manner from family, new friendships made with help arriving in the best possible way, all combining to help Dash and Lily discover what it is they really, really want to do when they ‘Mind the Gap’.
Mind the Gap is another excellent read from Rachel Cohn and David Leviathan as they capture once again the very essence of being young, in love and facing some serious life choices in the ongoing story of Dash and Lily as they discover what a ‘gap’ year is all about.
