The story that inspired the music is the Korean bamboo flute creation story:
In 681, the Silla King Munmu, requested on his deathbed that his ashes be scattered in the sea where the whales live and he would become a dragon and protect Silla from foreign invasion. After he died his son King Simun had a dream where his father and his top general Kim Yu Shin told him that a bamboo flute will bring peace to everything under the sky.
When Simun awoke he sailed out to the Gomun Temple that he had made in honour of his father. On the mountain was a special stalk of bamboo which he brought back to his palace and fashioned into a flute called Manpasikjeok.
When he played this flute it called to the spirits of his father King Munmu and General Kim who had the power to calm the seas, to prevent natural disasters, to cure diseases and cause enemy armies to retreat. It became know as “A flute that calms down 10,000 waves”
