This tiny, beautifully illustrated book Haiku Cats would be a marvellous treat for cat lovers, poetry lovers and those who appreciate wonderful artwork. The illustrations are inspired by antique Japanese prints. They “showcase the essence and elegance of those fascinating felines,” who share our world.

The foreword describes how the author came to be involved in the cat world when a neighbour’s tabby gave birth to five kittens on her bed in the early hours of the morning. Many years and kittens later this book evolved combining her love of felines and Asian design. Included in the book is an understanding of the lessons about life and living that we can glean from our furry friends.

There are so many types of cats, the Wanderer, with great curiosity, the Mewler, who insists on attention, and the Free spirit feline who teaches us to follow our fancies. The artist uses India Ink and antique Japanese prints to develop her wonderful cat collages.

Two of the poems that resonate with me are: –

‘Osmose through the fence

Slip into the neighbour’s yard

Taunt the indoor cat’

And this one depicting a fierce looking Picasso type cat,

‘Do not consider

a step in this direction

you will be sorry’

What a great way to indulge in your passion for cats. This little book should be kept handy, not just for the joy of the Haiku, or the artwork, but for the life lessons we all can learn from our feline friends.
