Dr Cole moves seamlessly from Egyptian history to the ancient Mayan prophecy regarding the apocalypse. His in depth knowledge of the Mayan civilization and the spread of its culture gives an authenticity to this work. Although it is a work of fiction, so many unexplained phenomena become plausible when looked at in a different light.

Once again we have the code breaking team of Joanne Phillips-Andrews (she has adopted her husband’s surname after the last adventure), Professor Alan Andrews, whose knowledge of ancient cultures and modern technology complements Joanne’s. Previously they almost died when experimented on at Stonehenge, but in fact their life force was rejuvenated and they have regained twenty years of their youth. Sofia (a former student of Joanne’s) and Charles, who met and became a couple in the previous adventure, are now married with twins. They re-join Joanne and Alan on Easter Island.

Obsidian, a valuable export for the Mayans was the link that took the team to Easter Island. Joanne and Andrew, after deciphering many hieroglyphics decided they could follow a trail if they flew there, and Charles and Sofia chose Easter Island as a belated honeymoon destination. With the team together again things happen quickly.

A deadly rival is discovered  and exposed while Alan comes to grips with metamaterials which are engineered to have properties not found naturally on earth. “This particular metamaterial has been designed as an invisibility cloak, and is used by the team”.

There is a strong environmental message in this story, and warnings that extremists may try to protect the planet earth any way they can.

Book two in this series is as riveting and unusual as the first book. Because of the detailed knowledge of astronomy, technology, and ancient cultures, Dr Cole can spend time to help the reader understand the basics of the civilization he is looking at. If you are after more than a superficial skimming as a basis of a story, this will thrill you.
