Losing a little in the translation the Countess de Sigur has given us a timeless story about optimism and the unquenchable human spirit which is so much loved by children and readers of all ages.

The tale commences with two boys left orphaned, trying to find food and shelter as the European winter creeps steadily on. Found sleeping by the side of the road by a soldier on his way back from the wars, he takes the boys to the Guardian Angel Inn, where the innkeepers, two sisters, agree to take the boys and look after them.

So commences a rollicking adventure while the boys find their feet in a world vastly different to the one known before. They learn about life at an inn and soon learn to enjoy the new experiences they have been given.

When grumpy and demanding Count Dourakine arrives in town, he makes his home at the Inn. The world the boys were beginning to know is turned upside down, presenting them with so many opportunities to make mischief, mayhem and not a little merrymaking which all adds to the rich tapestry of life at the Guardian Angel Inn – kid’s style

Timeless and fun, the style of writing, that of a play with a narrator, makes the book easy to relate to as it written about so many things which never change in the human spectrum, that of joy, love, laughter, mischief, mayhem and plain, simple enjoyment of life.
