There are six stories made up of 10 or more chapters in the story which makes up the book of the Rainbow Street Shelter and the pets who live or visit there.

Mona’s grandmother leaves town and Mona is asked to look after her grandmothers many pets. But Mona wants to do more and decides to open the house to all pets that need a home.

Mona and her friend Bert paint the house with a cherry red door and a rainbow over the top.

All the stories in the book are about the pets that use the shelter. The first pet to come to the shelter was a parrot that was hurt and so Mona adopted Gulliver and he guards the door to the shelter. Every time someone opens the door he welcomes them to the shelter.

There’s a dog called Bear who gets lost who comes to the shelter for safety, then a girl who wants a guinea pig and she come to the shelter to adopt the guinea pig who lives there.

The next story is about Mona’s uncle who gives her tickets to the fair. The lioness does not have enough milk to feed the cubs and so Mona takes the cub to the shelter. Kiki ( the cub) eventually goes to live at the zoo and then is returned to Africa.

There are so many great stories in this book and each story is full of different things happening. All the stories come back to life at the Rainbow Street Shelter.
