Every once in a while a book comes along which is very far from ordinary and this is one of them. Written with a message and understanding to all, stunningly illustrated, as far from ordinary as you can get, this is a truly beautiful book reaching out to all who have suffered tragedy and need to rebuild: Children and adults alike.

Written in the wake of cyclone Katrina which destroyed much of New Orleans, author William Joyce noticed the healing powers of story-telling as well as the amount of children reading in the shelters well after the cyclone had passed.

The story tells of Morris Lessmore and his love of books. Morris is a bit of a loner with a life which is so very ordinary that each day is recorded in a book: exactly as it happens.

The winds come and blow Morris Lessmore’s very orderly life all over the place: Poor Morris Lessmore. He does not know how to go about re-organising his life but eventually comes across an amazing room filled with books.

Over time these books become his friends and through these friends he begins to re-build his life. Along the way he discovers a huge and great world filled with very interesting people.

As the years go by Morris Lessmore introduces more and more children to his love of books until it is time for Morris Lessmore to leave and carry the love of his books, and the memories of the children they have helped, in his heart to the next place.

Not only does the book introduce life with all its twists and turns, but also the cycle of life from beginning to end in a very, very subtle manner.

A wonderful piece of literature destined to become one of the classics in children’s literature.
