The large picture book format is an excellent choice for this topic for children. On opening the front cover of Up, Up and Away we see illustrations of many aircraft which are named and their length and wingspan given. The next page shows websites for children to explore, some of which have online courses for various topics of aviation.

With the table of contents page we are introduced to Grandpa, who has his grandchildren, Molly and Simon with him. He invites us to explore the room to understand some of the things he will talk about.

The stories begin with Icarus and outline his disastrous flight. A detailed description of a bird’s wing is shown. Then the story moves to Asia and Kite flying. So many ideas are introduced on each page that interest is maintained.

Fascinating facts such as “The first recorded human flight took place on Oct 15th 1783in a balloon made by the Montgolfier brothers are presented.” There are many small pictures and colourful pages to hold the reader’s interest.

On the final pages we have a timeline of aviation achievements and the dates they occurred. Any child with an interest in aviation or with a curiosity about flight will enjoy this book. It is just a shame that Amelia Earheart seems to be the only female represented here.
