Factual information which is presented with quality illustrations, in the hardback picture book Volcano is so welcome. For skim reading there is much information that the pictures here convey. The double page spread is another feature which adds to the value of this book. The mostly dark page backgrounds add to the focus of tiny creatures in the ocean. For this is the story of how a volcano begins its journey under the sea.

Volcano’s begin with a rumble under the ocean and a gradual pushing up of a small mountain, which cracks the seabed. As the cold-water seeps into the cracks a chimney is formed, and it grows. Other chimneys emerge as the mountain that is forming from the lava grows. Movement from deep on the seabed brings food for the sea creatures. Constant eruptions ensure the mountain grows and forms an island. Gradually the lava cools and cracks; plant and bird life appear.

In a step-by-step progression using simple but direct language, this book would appeal to many children and most adults. It is beautifully presented with the pictures adding to the text for a complete understanding. The white text on dark backgrounds makes this easy to read. The sea creatures which inhabit the deepest part of the ocean show an understanding of their environment. They know when to leave the area and when to return to feed off the rich food sources that have been raised from the seabed.

Volcano is an excellent book with clear and concise language and wonderful illustrations.
