Grandparents can have a huge influence on their grandchildren by sharing their ideas and past experiences. The Grandma in When Grandma Burnt Her Bra explains, in a very clever way, just why she burnt her bra.

It was a way of protesting against conformity, and letting her voice be heard about injustice. When she includes dinosaurs in the story it has a double meaning. It explains the outmoded thinking of some people and captures the girl’s imagination.

Gran explains that in the olden days some people thought that women were not equal to men. Back in the dinosaur days, women were only allowed to clean and cook.

When there were elections only men could vote and even though women understood and could solve problems, they were not allowed to voice an opinion. There were so many dinosaur thoughts back then, but gradually women have shown how they are equal to the tasks that most men can do.

The illustrations in When Grandma Burnt Her Bra show many stone age people and dinosaurs living the same life they always had, without thinking about rules for women.

It was only when women’s voices were raised in protest that gradually there became an acceptance that there WAS inequality and for no other reason than that was the way it had always been.

Great discussions about roles for girls and women can be referred to from this book. When Grandma Burnt Her Bra is a terrific way to raise this important subject.
