In this long awaited sequel to the Seven Suns saga Anderson has delivered yet another epic novel as a follow onto the Saga of the Shadows series.

Although this series is set some twenty years on many of the characters beloved in the Seven Suns saga are back again. The human race, having expanded further out into the stars has, by doing so, managed to upset the ancient race of IIdrians, former rulers of the Spiral Arm.

This brings about some serious issues but both the human Confederation and the Iidrian Empire realise that to be able to live in something like harmony they must combine forces to find out what lies beyond their world.

As this is a new series a new family of characters needs to be introduced and they seem to number many. Therefor a lot of the time is spent in meeting these people who are destined to travel in a large ship to attempt to discover what lies out there, beyond their vision and has the potential to either harm or enhance their world.

They do encounter nebula that appears to be menacing and this establishes the basis for further investigation as to just what sort of threat this may be.

Will existence as they know it be threatened with extinction or can the forces combined met the challenge presented by what appears to be pure evil. What effect will this have on their existence in the meantime and how will the planets survive this new holocaust.

Volumes of reading at its best for sci-fi aficionados as this is the beginning where the plot is being laid, the characters introduced and the appetite wetted for the next instalment.
