When Cliff Hardy takes on what seems to be a relatively simple but somewhat mysterious case of a 19th century shipwreck off the Australian coast, little did he realise just what it was he was walking into.

But only days later he gets the message when he realises one of the notorious crime families in Sydney are involved in more ways than one and are after the loot, no holds barred.

Not only that, Hardy also discovers there are undercover cops involved, but as the plot thickens it is pretty hard to tell whose side they are on: theirs, the law or the crime lords.

As with all things Cliff Hardy takes on there are more twists and turn to the tale that you would find on a “Zig Zag” railway, leaving you thinking you have the problem, if not that case, solved.

Turn the page and you are lead up another ally way as the situation develops and appears to be out of control.

Add hard nose journalist Marisha Henderson to the mix, who is researching the Tanner family, a retired copy turned PI who ends up dead and you a have a full blown Cliff Hardy mystery murder.

As always and in the inimitable Cliff Hardy manner the story unfolds to lead us to a totally unexpected ending while leaving questions still un-answered, as with life in general, Cliff Hardy Style.

Another great yarn from the pen of Peter Corris.
