From the first page, the reader is immediately drawn into the predicament of a young woman, Tiballis, who had been forced to marry a brute of a man after she was orphaned at just fourteen years of age. Set in London in 1483 during the reign of King Edward IV, we are thrust into the miasma of the seedy side of London.

Running away from home, Tiballis meets a mysterious man, Andrew Cobham, and an assortment of shady characters who become her family. Danger, however, lurks round every corner as they strive to uncover the treason that is threatening to harm the king and turn the country into turmoil.

Initially, I was completely wrapped up in the story and thoroughly enjoying The King’s Shadow. However, as I progressed, I have to say that I found some aspects of the novel repetitive and somewhat irritating. I also thought the numerous bedroom scenes quite unnecessary.

Overall, The King’s Shadow is an easy read and I enjoyed learning a little of that period in English history. Will I be immediately going out to buy Gaskell Denvil’s next novel? I’m afraid the answer is no.
