Fatty O’Leary, aka Cornelius Patrick O’Leary had earned his nickname as a child and was known to all about as a good, kind man always ready to forgive those who did not like him or did an unkindness to others.

As many an Irishman born and raised in the States he had always had a hankering to return to the ‘old country’.  As a significant birthday was due his equally rotund wife decided they would travel to Ireland to see and experience firsthand the delights and traditions of his heritage.

As the day drew ever closer the excitement mounted until they finally boarded the plane, which is when things started to go ever so slightly wrong, mainly due to Fatty’s girth and the constraints of the aircraft, its passengers and staff.

Finally arriving at their destination of an Irish Country House Hotel, another carefully researched pleasure on their trip, their holiday experience did not improve, but in their gentle manner both Fatty and his wife, although thinking all peoples in Ireland were an little strange, forgave and decided to consider it all a part of the holiday.

And so their undoubtedly comical holiday adventures continued until they returned home, considerably wiser, and with Fatty, at the instigation of his Doctor, deciding to go to the Mayo Clinic to reduce his weight, which once again did not go according to plan.

In this wonderfully genteel look at what makes the world and its people go ‘round, we are once again gently enticed into the lives of very ordinary people who accept the extra-ordinary with a delicate grace and bemusement, all created by the hands of a master wordsmith in Alistair McCall Smith.

Fatty O’Leary is a new character we get to meet from the Alistair McCall Smith family of characters, along with his delightful wife Betty and their social circle, located in the town of Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA and with any sort of Irish Luck they will soon be back with yet another adventure, Fatty O’Leary style.
