Sumptuous, theatrical, endearing, intriguing are words that spring to mind when reading The Little Shadows. The “turn of phrase” is a delight. We journey with three sisters: Aurora,”the eldest and most beautiful” Clover the “thoughtful” one and “joyous and headstrong” Bella as they make their way and their living in the theatrical world of vaudeville during the First World War. The book opens when the sisters are in their teens and at the beginning of their career we follow these ladies into adulthood with all its joy and disappointment.

This book is about relationships and being sisters; making decisions which will further their finances, social standing and careers and maybe even loves and relationships. We follow and are entranced by the sisters various theatrical tours, friendships and yet……. life is hard and we feel for the sisters as their fortune and fate befall them. The whole book is drenched in all the theatrical elements from language to the mindset of the characters that in true style “the show must go on” even if you have just given birth, as in the case of one of the characters. The increasing impact and intrusion of the war hangs over all. Enjoy the various acquaintances that the sisters meet and befriend on the vaudeville scene as they are just as well crafted as the central characters.

The Little Shadows makes you laugh, cry and share in the sisters lives. As you read you wish them every success in the world but the life of a true performer is never easy nor dull and a whole family of performers well…you’ll just have to read this very entertaining book and be glad you did.
