Two great summer reads from Sarah Pekkanen, under the same cover takes a look at life and its little foibles: What happens when you have a successful life, everything seems to be going your way and suddenly it all comes to a crashing halt!
In ‘The Opposite of Me’, Lindsay Rowe is the ultimate driven woman, striding up the career ladder at an elite advertising firm in New York. She has denied herself anything like ‘a life’ in pursuit of success, a vice-chairmanship and a larger pay check.
She has worked so hard that she can smell that success. She has been congratulated by everyone in the Company who counts and is simply waiting for the announcement when something seems too be slightly off!
As a twin, Lindsay has always taken second position to her glamorous, successful sister, Alex. Their relationship is less than ideal and looks like remaining that way until things really do go horribly wrong for Lindsay.
She finds herself returning to her family home to lick her wounds and try to rediscover her place in the grand scheme of things, which as fate would have it, is as far from a successful advertising exec as you could possibly get.
As Lindsay learns to discover who she is and has become, she is also forced to face the fact that all is not as it seems in her sisters glamorous life and it is time she really looked at accepting life as it is and not as she has mistakenly though.
An enjoyable and interesting read as Lindsay learns and earns her way to happiness!
“Skipping a Beat” is along similar lines where successful couple Julia and Michael are living the dream on their multi-million dollar income.
When Michael collapses at a board meeting and is bought back to life, he reassess his life and what it has come to mean and decides to give it all up and start again.
Julia can’t believe this is really what he wants to do but as the weeks roll along and Michael remains firm she is thrown into a state of despair which has severe consequences.
Can she truly give up the lifestyle she has become used to or should she move away from the whole horrible mess, leaving Michael to live his life the way he chooses.
Facing a grim reality she eventually chooses to stay, giving them both a second chance at happiness and life together.
But as always, fate has a different pathway chosen for them and it is not until Julie has to learn to live life on her own she really discovers the person Michal has become and the respect he was held in throughout his community.
This one will touch the heart, so have a tissue box handy and enjoy a good weep, as Michael and Julie set out to rediscover love, the second time around.
