Alexander McCall Smith’s affection for Edinburg absolutely shines through this story. His descriptions of the streets at night, the cafes, the mellow stones of the buildings are heartwarming. The story itself is not a new direction, for Alexander is a lover of people watching and this is all about people and their dreams.

Katie is the main character. She has inherited a dating Company from her cousin. People come to her hoping to meet a partner. They are matched up with someone else on her files. Katie then takes the couple for a coffee to a little Italian Restaurant; she stays for a short while and then leaves. The process involves several meetings, and copious note taking by Katie. Meanwhile other friendships bloom in the office.

The variety of characters depicted, young and older, each with their individual flares and flaws, is the trademark of this author’s writing. We also follow the life of Ness, Katie’s cousin, who has moved to a remote town in Canada for a break.

Unlike many of the people in the story, Ness is not looking for love, but for friendship and companionship. Then, there is William, who is so much a part of the Perfect Passion Company that his advice and opinions are often sought by Katie, as he lives next door. He is a lovely young Australian man who knits and designs.

The inter weaving of these characters and their stories is done with skill and a gentle touch. This is a cosy read for an escape from the realities of life.
