April Bloomfield has invited herself into your kitchen via the pages of her latest book all about vegies: yep the fresh green, and red, and yellow and purple and orange vegies that can be grown in your home garden, purchased fresh from the greengrocers or local growers markets and made up into some tasty, delicious dishes that are cost effective, nutritious and yummy..

The first chapters address the issue of fresh food and how her love of fresh has grown over the years and lead her into becoming the co-owner of the much praise Spotted Pig restaurant in New York.

By the time you have read the introduction you feel like you have known April for years, she is your new ‘bestie’ and she is happy to help you create some of the wonderful food for which she is renowned.

Although not specifically divided into seasons the book flows from Spring to Summer to Winter to encourage the use of seasonal veg, which will ensure you never get bored with what can come out of the garden. Using seasonal veg should also ensure you are able to get the freshest of veg, which does definitely add that extra taste to the dish.

This is by no means a totally vegetarian book as luscious dishes such as Steamed Aubergine with Ground Pork and Thai Basil and Braised Collards with Bacon are allowed to grace the pages, but essentially, it is all about vegetables.

Each recipe comes with a lovely introduction to the dish, presented in such a way as to have you believe April is standing next to you, explaining those tricky and useful little bits of information that make a dish shift from good to great!

There is a wonderful section entirely devoted to making your own pasta, a winter warmer section on the not so humble potato and so much more, just waiting for you to try out together.

So grab your basket, head off down to your local greengrocers or growers market and set out to create that hearty vegie meal, April Bloomfield style.

You will definitely enjoy it.
