Hachette today announces the launch of its first ever modern classics list – Hachette Essentials. Driven by demand
in its international markets for a classics publication program to compete with the likes of Vintage and Penguin
Modern Classics, Hachette has curated a seminal list of award-winning, critically acclaimed and beloved titles.
The Hachette Essentials series comprises a collection of titles that are regarded as modern classics. A carefully and
lovingly curated selection of distinctive, ground-breaking fiction and non-fiction titles published since 1950.

The launch list is as follows:

The Blind Assassin – Margaret Atwood
A Visit from the Goon Squad – Jennifer Egan
Cold Mountain – Charles Frazier
Schindler’s Ark – Thomas Keneally
If This is a Man / The Truce – Primo Levi
Cloud Atlas – David Mitchell
Gilead – Marilynne Robinson
Me Talk Pretty One Day – David Sedaris
The Sympathiser – Viet Thanh Nguyen
The Color Purple – Alice Walker
Fingersmith – Sarah Waters

Designed by award-winning Australian artist and designer Josh Durham the jackets are unified as a series but
distinctive as books. They feature spines in the same blue that runs through the river mural at Hachette UK’s
headquarters, Carmelite House.

The first 11 titles will be published with major marketing campaigns across Hachette’s major international
territories of Australia, Ireland, India and New Zealand, as well as Europe, The Middle East, Asia, Africa and The
Americas. Further titles are planned for 2020.

Hachette Austalia Managing Director, Justin Ractliffe said, ‘It has been a joy to work on this project with my
international collegues and this absolutely stellar list of authors and books. If you are curious, engaged, hungry for
experience and alive to the possibilities of literature, with all its questions and complexities, challenges and
provocations, shocks and comforts, terrors and joys – then these are the books for you. They will make you feel
and they will make you think. They might just change your life.
