This is Alafair’s tenth book and it shows as she writes with clarity and certainty, which can be difficult when dealing with many characters and murders. The clues are revealed and unraveled within a framework of information and planning, keeping the reader in the loop at all times. As the author was a former Deputy District Attorney, and is currently a Professor of Law, she writes with authority.

Her characters are engaging and the relationship between Ellie Hatcher and her policeman partner Rogan close and tight. They are good friends and think alike, they trigger alternative thinking from each other. The relationship between Ellie and her romantic partner Max is deeply tender and loving. This could become seriously compromised with this particular murder investigation, and is certainly tested.

The complication in this story is a recent murder which is an exact replica of five previous murders several years before. The exact details of the murders were not released to the public, and at that time, a man was arrested and confessed to the murder of victim number five.

Ellie and Rogan have to retrace the earlier murders, to make sense of this.  Meanwhile, a brash, up-and-coming lawyer offers to represent the guilty man insisting

on his immediate release from jail.  She then persuades a young lawyer, who is the step-sister of one of the murder victims, to join her team.

This involves the lawyers and the Police going back to the small town of Utica, and working together with the local Police.  There is resentment between the local Police and Ellie and Rogan, who represent NYPD.  Some of the original Police work appears to be suspect, creating more animosity.

There are many twists and turns in this story, but all are credible and logical.  This is a book that you just have to keep reading.
